Overnight or day trip?
The more comfortable option is an overnight stay. You will have time to enjoy the sunset, sleep properly, and not rush back to Manila during the evening rush.

Pico de Loro is not a public beach that you can just show up at, although day passes may be available through select hotel promotions. Reserve a hotel stay, purchase an official day package where available, or use a properly endorsed condominium booking. However, there are several public beaches close by.

Pro travel tips
Depart Manila at 5:30 or 6:00 a.m. on Saturdays. Bring swimwear, reef-safe sun protection, sandals, a light cover-up, and motion sickness medicine if anyone in your group is not a fan of winding roads.

Families are better off having a small day bag in the passenger area instead of opening the main luggage every time someone wants sunscreen.

Picking a Calatagan beach resort

Plan for the tide.
The coast of Calatagan can be very shallow at low tide. The water may recede far from the shoreline, exposing tidal flats and tiny marine creatures.

It can be fascinating for children but might disappoint guests expecting deep swimming water all day. Ask the resort what time high and low tides will occur during your stay. Some areas have rocks, coral fragments, shells, or seagrass, so aqua shoes are helpful.

What to bring and eat
Try grilled seafood, fresh fish, squid, Batangas lomi, and kapeng barako. On your way home, stop at a local bakery or market for rice cakes and snacks.

Please bring cash in small denominations, dry bags, insect repellent, reusable water bottles, hats, and waterproof footwear. Digital payments aren’t always smooth sailing with mobile data and card terminals, so don’t rely on them too much.

Anilao in Mabini, Batangas, is known as one of the Philippines’ most reputable diving and underwater photography locations. The coastal resorts are perfect for snorkeling, scuba diving, freediving, boat trips, and amazing sunset views over Balayan Bay.

Many shorelines are rocky or pebbly. Some resorts are built on slopes with stairs down to the water. Choose your property with care when traveling with toddlers, elderly relatives, or anyone with limited mobility.

Getting to Manila
Normally it's a two-and-a-half- to three-hour drive, but Friday afternoon traffic can lengthen that.

The main route is via SLEX and the STAR Tollway to Batangas City and then follows the roads through San Pascual, Bauan, and Mabini. For the STAR Tollway part, it’s simple. The slower part comes after the expressway, where town traffic, jeepneys, tricycles, and narrow streets require more patience.

When discussing public transportation, people usually refer to taking a bus to Batangas, followed by another ride toward Mabini, and then a tricycle to the resort. Published directions for an Anilao property, for example, describe a bus-to-jeepney-to-tricycle journey. That works for backpackers but less so with dive gear or family luggage.

A private driver can take you straight to the correct entrance of the resort. That matters because “Anilao” is a broad term for a long stretch of coast, and some properties are much further down the Mabini Peninsula than first-time visitors expect.

Anilao activities
Certified divers can arrange boat dives with the resort’s dive center. Those new to diving can book an introductory session, and non-divers can snorkel, kayak, swim, or relax by the pool.

Resorts in Anilao range from one level of comfort to another. The Asri is a PADI five-star facility with access to numerous dive sites, while Amor Laut is more of a boutique experience with only 14 suites.

If you are a family or a mixed group, select a property that allows both divers and non-divers to have a wonderful day. Eating is done mostly in the resorts. The region is not an area where every beachfront property is surrounded by cafes and restaurants, so check to see if meals are included and if advance ordering is required.

Suggested 2-day itinerary
Day 1: Depart Manila before 6:00 a.m., have breakfast after passing through the city, and arrive in Mabini before lunch. Spend the afternoon snorkeling or trying a beginner dive, then watch the sunset.

Day two: book an early boat dive or a lazy swim, have a proper breakfast, and check out before lunch. On the way back, stop for Batangas lomi. The province’s renowned lomi is famous for its thick broth and generous toppings.

How to get there from Manila
Allow yourself three to four hours in light traffic and up to five hours on peak weekends.

The most common way is through SLEX and STAR Tollway, getting off near Ibaan, passing through Rosario and San Juan, then turning toward Laiya. The final stretch is on local roads shared with motorcycles, tricycles, buses, and agricultural vehicles. The Association of Laiya Resort Owners also has the same general routing: SLEX–STAR–Ibaan–Rosario–San Juan. 

The drive is not hard per se, but it is tiring. If you’re heading back Sunday afternoon, expect slow traffic through San Juan and Rosario and congestion near the expressways.

Better yet, a professional driver will let the family sleep on the way home, rather than have an unlucky relative behind the wheel.

Where to stay?

A slower itinerary to Laiya
Leave Manila at 5 or 5:30 a.m. Pull off an expressway service area for coffee and breakfast, and let the kids use a real bathroom.

Arrive before lunch, therelaxsy the first afternoon. Swimming, kayaking, beach games, and sunset drinks. Don't do too many paid activities in one day.

On the second morning, go out for a walk before the beach gets busy. Depending on the resort, you might be able to book snorkeling, banana boat rides, kayaking, and other water activities.

For lunch, try local dishes such as lomi, goto, kakanin, adobo, grilled fish, and sinaing na tulingan. San Juan’s tourism office includes lomi, goto, rice cakes, and adobo in the town’s food traditions.

Traveling with family tips
A van or SUV is especially useful for grandparents, toddlers, helpers, and lots of luggage. Pack a separate beach bag that includes towels, sunblock, a change of clothes, and children’s medicine.

Bring cash, charging cables, reusable bottles, and snacks for the way back. Check-out traffic can be hectic when many resorts check out at the same time, so maybe plan to leave after an early lunch or stay one more night.
